for water and food.  Stainless can be easily washed in the dishwasher, and cannot be broken like crockery style, or chewed like the plastic bowls which can retain the taste of food.  Plastic is fine for water, or dry food.

During the next few weeks the puppies teeth will be loosened by chewing, and fall out to be replaced by permanent teeth.  Be sure to have several raw-hide chew toys, like these on hand, so the pup can relieve its mouth on its toys, rather than yours!

Rawhide is fine, as long as it is the solid leather-like these, don't give pups compacted chew sticks that can come apart in pieces and choke them.   Also buy several plastic squeaky toys, and small to medium size rope bones.  Big stuffed animals   with no buttons, or parts that can be chewed off are good too.  Chohoo hooves last for months and are great for teething also.

Hint   The best system I've devised is to keep a basket full of squeaky toys, and rawhides etc. on the floor where it is easy for the puppy to access it.  Rather than looking for cords,  or other objects of yours to chew on, the pup soon learns where his,  or her toys are located and helps himself when he needs to chew.

"Cashmere" playing with a sheepskin toy he likes to carry around,  "Stuart" in sheepskin cuddler bed with his rope bones, and a Chohoo hoof to chew on.  Rawhides, and stuffed toys in the basket next to his bed make it fun for him to pick his own.

I  recommend these cuddler beds from Petsmart highly- they are completely washable and so comfy!!

     ( These compacted rawhides are fine for adult dogs  as a treat, but can come apart in pieces, so its best not to give to pups, till 6 or 7 months old, also these are beef flavored so it is best not to use on carpet since saliva makes it sticky.

3. Iams puppy biscuits-  have a box on hand to lure the pup to follow your commands at first. When playing out in the yard occasionally have a pocket with a few biscuits in it. When the pup is a bit away from you call its name to come, and re- ward that simple act with a Iams treat.  It really helps to establish that you reward good behavior!  Praise the puppy and pet it for  coming as well, so that when it is older it will always associate coming with a positive experience, whether it gets food or not.

We like to start off with the small breed Iams Puppy which is easier for young puppies to chew, and move to Medium/normal Iams Puppy

(  Cindy's rainbow litter of all colors , competition from littermates urges pups to eat quickly once away from their siblings, some pups need a little encouragement... Like Iams puppy canned mixed with their dry Iams, or Eukanuba  puppy food to start them on a good eating habit at their new home. )                                   

Canned Iams food-  the first few nights away from his mom and siblings most pups tend to eat less, with no competition at the food bowl some pups tend not to eat well.  By offering a mixture of Iams or Eukanuba Puppy food with a few tablespoons of canned food, pups will be sure to fill their tummy that first lonely night away in its new home, and get a  better more satisfied sleep. This is optional, many puppies have no problem taking care of a bowl of dry Iams or Eukanuba! If your puppy needs motivation though, canned food should help.

5.Simple Solution-  while working on consistency in your pups housetraining, there can be mistakes from time to time until it   is a few months old, the best way to succeed is to be prepared in case they happen. This product takes the stain, as well as  the bacteria, out of the carpet completely.  Its enzymes eat the bacteria, and the urine is gone so it wont trigger a repeat when the pup passes that area of the carpet again.  ( check our upcoming training section for further suggestions on housebreaking)

We found the same product in a competeing pet order catalog that was $12 a gallon, this like is $14 for 2 gallons

Leather collars last for years, the one on the left above is 9 yrs old. but can be chewed and you must buckle these types -vs.- the Top Paw brand we buy from Petsmart like this purple one they are unconditionally guaranteed and have a plastic snap together clasp.

Also they are adjustable, and washable.

this size is the smallest available at Petsmart and can be loosened when pup grows.  Don't forget the ID tag!        

6. Collar- buy a collar right away for your new puppy.  They should learn to accept the feel of the collar within a few days.

Most pups will try to scratch a new collar  for the first few minutes but soon learn to ignore it.  This is natural.  My favorite collars are the Top Paw- Scout brand with nylon collars and plastic one-step push button on, and off.  These are much quicker and easier than the buckle style.  The plastic never rusts as some of the metal buckles can ten to do.  Leather is ok also but isn't unconditionally guaranteed  as the  Top Paw, Scout is.

Good This collar is a good brand & size to get at first for your new puppy. This is a 5-7" collar

We reccommend using a nylon collar, tighter weave is less prone to wear & tear. This looser weave to the right can get caught on toenails & teeth, causing it to pick up & fray a little

7.LEASHES- retractable & matching designs

You can use the shorter nylon kinds if you want to look cute!  Here is "Alli" modeling a  flashy little hot pink number!  metal Identification tags are a good idea on your pups collar. (Bone style ID tag above)

8. NAIL CLIPPERS

 

11.  Nail Clippers-  keep a pair of clippers at home so you can do your own nail trimming.  The first couple of beagles  I had got their nails done at the vet... which is fine however, you can easily learn to do it yourself.  These days the clippers are Teflon coated and easy to use.  You can find this style at Petsmart  where I got mine, for the price of one nail trimming at the Groomer!  Simply hold the pups paw in your hand, and use the other to snip off the white tip,  up to the pink quick (where the feeling starts).  With the dew claws (thumb nail) removed nail clipping is much faster and easier, this is another reason we do it.

7.Ear Mite treatment-  Have a bottle on hand to clean the pups ears with once a month, or as needed.  It prevents any microscopic mites from making a home under your beagles long floppy ears where it is easy to hide.

     Petsmart also carries wormer in tablet form or chewable by D-worm.

( just be sure to choose a brand that does both round, and hook worms , and give it every 2 weeks until your vet advises that your pup is old enough to switch to a once a month brand.) "Evict" is a good brand to use since it does both and tastes good too.

8.  Worming medicine-  Keep a bottle of wormer on hand to rid the pup of any worms it may pick up.  They say  all pups get worms from their mom while she is pregnant, this is due to the fact that she can't be wormed with poison while carrying babies & worm eggs are in the soil. Also  a puppy can sniff another dogs droppings and inhale worm eggs into their nostrils.  For this reason even though we have wormed the puppies several times before they go home ..a  few days before your first Vet visit pore 1 teaspoon of wormer on some canned Iams puppy.  Feed it to your pup, its that easy.  They love the taste and eat it up easily.  Now you are ready for the first check up.  Take the Health folder provided to show the pups previous worming and shot dates.                              

"Revolution" This product is for older puppies & dogs. It does it all. Fleas, Ticks, Worms,& Mites are all controlled with once a month drops on the pets shoulders.  Available only at your Vet I recommend them because they work so well.

9. Crate- These come in many styles. We suggest crate training.  It not only helps with housebreaking as the books all suggest,but also makes a safe quiet spot to be off to themselves for young pups.  Pups rest a lot when they are young, & feel safe & protected in their own "den" as the experts call it.  A good size for the dog is what you want to invest in.  You can put a soft blanket, or sheepskin piece in the crate for the pup to snuggle down into.  And at first  a stuffed toy to play with, &  lay on top of like they would their brothers, & sisters. This takes up some of the room in the crate until the puppy grows enough to fit the crate.  You want a crate the full grown size dog can stand up, & turn around in.

Delta has changed their requirements now and they no longer accept any type of crate unless it has the screws on the sides to hold it together , (snap type latches of plastic are not being accepted any longer)

This size of crate is also nicer for older pups and dogs to sleep in at night (they can hold their bladder through the night and it is roomy enough for them to move around in. When crate training a puppy, its best to not use the largest crate so that they are not tempted to go over to one side a relieve themselves. Crate training comes after they are older enough to hold their bladder, this can usually start after 14-15 weeks, and you can plan to get up early to take them outside in the morning.) The largest size also does not come with a handle- so intermediate is easier to carry.

 these are the kind we like best for shipping puppies in they are airline approved, and fit better into most cars than the wire kind. They are also easier to carry because they have a handle on top and being more closed in appeals to dogs. One expert who has written a book called Katz on Dogs about common sense ways to train your pet, says it gives them an opportunity to be off the clock so to speak, they don't need to protect you or the home, and can relax and take a nap away from it all.

Plastic coated wire crate- Christmas of 98 "Dobie" and "Shiloh" stay with us while their family vacation.  Both brothers were bought by the owner of the Harley Davidson store on Independence Blvd. in Charlotte, for his 2 sons.  "Chase" the 3rd pup in the crate was also staying with us, as well as his older brother "Romper", both owned by a young couple from Charlotte. Chase remembers his 2 littermates and climbs in their crate for the night!  Meanwhile "Romper" gets in bed with Christi!! (he was purchased before we started suggesting crate training to new owners!!  We saw our dogs trying out the crates boarding dogs would bring, and realized...they actually LIKE them!  So after consulting with our vet on crates, we began crate training pups from the time they were weaned, and find it to be an excellent idea.

("Bubba" stays with us while his family goes to Myrtle Beach)  he gets to see his sister  "Cindy" who decides to sleep in his nice wire crate the first night!  Siblings know each other, even after 6 months apart. (Bubba's family is given a adult female beagle by their Vet's office ,who had been found along a hwy.  They soon find out she is from hunting stock, because she digs out of their fenced yard and goes wandering in the neighborhood.  Bubba never leaves with her, so they give her away and come back for a puppy by Cindy to be his playmate!!  "We are sold on the difference"  they tell Miss Christina. They also claim they aren't allergic to Bubba, who sheds much less than the hunting female, and needs fewer baths- no hound dog odor they tell me. (collapsible crate)  (medium size pet taxi)

These beds are pretty, and we have a few, however the material used can shed a little, leaving small dark bits stuck to the carpet. Ours is in a room with a tile floor, so its not a problem for us in that room. The sheepskin beds don't shed, and we recommend them instead
